A peek inside my wardrobe…

White tee, barefoot on the stairs

The staircase of my building, the one I run down every morning without ever looking at it. An oversized tee, no shoes, and that dark wood that creaks on the third step. We shot the whole series without leaving the stairwell — all I had to do was sit down and let the light do the rest.

Third step. The one that creaks.
Lena sitting facing the camera on the dark wooden steps, one leg stretched down
You sit down for five minutes and stay an hour.
Lena sitting sideways on the stairs, looking back over her shoulder, bare legs
The wood stays cold, even in summer.
Lena in profile on the steps, one foot resting lower than the other, red polish
I listen to the neighbours coming up and I don't move.
Lena sitting with her knees together on the stairs, bare feet side by side on a step
Knees under my chin, like when I was ten.
Lena sitting facing the camera, hands crossed on her knees, both bare feet in the foreground
No one ever comes by at this hour.
Lena sitting in the stairwell, eyes to the camera, legs folded
The hallway light times out every two minutes.
Lena sitting cross-legged on a step, hands on her ankles, soles showing
Cross-legged on a step. Precarious balance.
Lena standing on the stairs, one foot on a higher step, hand on her knee
Up, down, up again.
Lena standing three-quarters from behind on the stairs, head turned to the camera, hands on the rails
Last step before the landing. Last shot.
